Not Many People Know About These Pronunciation Errors!

-Published on 19th March 2022 by Oxford School of English-

Want to stand out from the rest? Here are few words which people mostly don’t know they’re pronouncing incorrectly. Speak them right and you will sound advanced in English.

1. BREAKFAST The first meal of the day when you break a long night’s fast is actually not BREAK-fast, but BREK-FUST.

2. PIZZA Most of us are fond of PEE-ZAA, PI-ZAA, or PIT-ZAA, but only a few of us love PEET-SUH! So yes, your favourite Italian dish is actually pronounced PEET-SUH.

3. COUPON KOO-PUHN (कूपन) is the right pronunciation in Hindi. In English the correct way to say is KOO-PAWN.

4. FEBRUARY The second month of the year is actually feb-ROO-ary. The common incorrect pronunciation is feb-YOO-ary. Yes, it is spoken exactly as it is written.

5. IRON We AI-UN our clothes. We don’t AI-RUHN them. ‘R’ is silent in iron.

6. ALMOND Finding hard to remember these tricky pronunciations? Well, a few AAH-MUHNDS everyday will do you good. Don’t ever call them AEL-MUHNDS!

7. SUITE This is one of the most confusing words. The piece if clothing you wear formally is suit, pronounced as SOOT. But suite is a set of rooms where you can book your stay. The correct pronunciation is SWEET. Strange, isn’t it?

8. COCOA Your favourite hot chocolate is made of KO-KO powder, not KO-KOA powder!

9. CHORES The everyday household work/tasks you do are your CHO-rs, not KORs.

10. SOUR We all have read of the popular children’s story, The Grapes are Sour. Well, those grapes are really SOWER, not SAAR or SAUR!

Hope you learnt something interesting today!
